The Power of Meditation in Indian Spirituality

In today’s dynamic and competitive world, we are drifting away from the needs of our soul. Entangled excessively in worldly activities we have lost the connect with our soul. The noise and chaos around us don’t let us sit in peace and we are engulfed in immense clutter. Thus, today it is even more necessary to meditate. Lot of people are taking refuge in spirituality and finding inner peace.

Meditation in Indian Spirituality:

Indian Spirituality has always believed in meditation or Dhyana. Especially Hinduism, which is a very old religion is more about spiritual growth and connecting with your inner self. As long as the religion has existed meditation is a part of it.

Hinduism believes that every human being is a spiritual being originating from the supreme source which is called as Bramhan.

We all get so busy with our daily life that we feel worldly things are of prime importance. So we start to drift away from the Divine source. Spiritual practices like meditation bring us closer to the divine power or nature and help us to be quieten the disturbances.

Some people believe that mantra chanting during meditation helps us reach divinity.

What is mantra?

Mantras have vibrations that drive us to know our true spiritual nature. It transcends the ignorance within us that blocks our spiritual progress. The scriptures mention that chanting mantra helps us to get in touch with our inner self and we begin to rise above the conditioned mind. We arrive at such a juncture in this spiritual journey that we don’t get affected by the confusion and dilemma caused by our thoughts.

Yoga and meditation originated in India, and it is mentioned in old Indian text called as Rigveda.

Meditation calms your mind, reduces stress and Yoga improves your health and emotional wellbeing through movement and breath awareness. Yoga utilizes breath and movement to help us focus on the present moment. Meditation encourages to focus on a single point and stay still.

Yoga Sutra written by Patanjali mentions instructions on meditation and factors that include meditation practice.

The second sutra in the first chapter mentioned in the Yoga Sutra states

What is Yoga all about?

Yogas cittavrttinirodhah

Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind.

When body, mind and senses come into balance, your mind becomes still. Our continuous craving for pleasure and the desire to be secure cannot be satiated. Only when we realize this truth, our quest to know our inner self emerges and we begin to meditate.

In Yoga Sutra:

Dharana is mentioned as art of concentration

Followed by Dharana is meditation, which is called dhyana – state of pure consciousness.

Then it leads to Samadhi  - the state of final liberation or enlightenment.

Dharana, Dhyana and samadahi.

Or

Concentration, meditation and enlightenment.

Meditation relaxes your mind and relieves stress. So people across the globe are finding its benefits and learning to meditate. They are learning more about Indian spiritualism, and Yoga on the quest for inner peace. The more you dwell into Indian spiritualism the closer you get to yourself.
