Tirupati: The Divine Abode of Lord Venkateswara
Tirupati, located in the Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh, is one of India's most important and holy pilgrimage destinations. It has the famous Sri Venkateswara Temple which receives millions of visitors desiring divine blessings and fulfillments of promises made to God.
The Legend of Tirumala
As Hindu history goes, Lord Vishnu had incarnated as Lord Venkateswara to redeem humanity during the Kali Yuga. Geological features of the Tirumala hills are said to embody Adisesha, the serpent on which Lord Vishnu reclines. Thus, Goddess Lakshmi married the Lord in this location, as Padmavati, marking it as a location where there was divine union. The temple is also tied to the legend of Sage Bhrigu testing the patience of the Trimurti, thus leading to Lord Vishnu's incarnation as Venkateswara.
The Sacred Journey
Pilgrims arrive in Tirumala by road, or by the historic footpaths (Alipiri Mettu or Srivari Mettu). Many devotees choose the arduous journey uphill, and do so with bare feet, while chanting "Govinda! Govinda!" in a state of devotion. Many devotees feel the spiritual energy of their barefoot journey brings them closer to the divine. On the route, devotees stop at sacred places (Gali Gopuram, Mokalla Parvatham) before arriving at the temple.
The Temple and Worship Practices
The Sri Venkateswara Temple, marvel of modern architecture, features meticulous carvings with the idol of Lord Venkateswara decorated with gold and valuable jewels. Rituals conducted every day include Suprabhata Seva (the early morning prayer), Thomala Seva, Archana, and the popular Sarvadarshanam which provides devotees with a chance to view the deity's idol as he is covered in the fragrant sandalwood.
A significant tradition is the head tonsuring which symbolizes humility and devotion to God. Temple Laddu Prasadam is world-famous and deemed a sacred blessing from the temple that is highly sought after by pilgrims. Another important offering to the Lord is Hundi where devotees donate large amounts of money in gratitude.
Other Spiritual Places in Tirupati
Outside the major temple, there are a number of spiritual landmarks in Tirupati:
Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple at Tiruchanur, dedicated to Goddess Padmavathi.
Kapila Theertham, a temple and waterfall dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple, which houses more Vaishnavite traditions.
Silathoranam, a naturally occurring rock that is believed to be in direct link with Lord Venkateswara's divine presence.
Akash Ganga Theertham, a holy waterfall whose waters are used in the temple procedure.
The Spiritual Importance
Tirupati represents an enclave of belief and commitment. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) manages temple offerings and donations for charitable projects, such as education, healthcare, and the Annadanam of devotees. The TTD also finances the propagation of Vedic studies and religious education throughout the nation.
Conclusion
A pilgrimage to Tirupati is a life-changing event. With the sanctity of the temple, the antiquity of traditions, and the divine influence, Tirupati represents a center of devotion. Whatever the reason, whether searching for peace of mind, fulfillment of a pledge, or spiritual awakening, every devotee departs Tirumala grateful in their hearts, and enlivened in their devotion to Venkateswara.
