Navratri Beyond Dandiya: The Deeper Spiritual Meaning of the Nine Nights
Navratri is India’s most vibrant festival, filled with colour, dance and music. Though this nine-day festival is a lot more than just that. It has a deeper spiritual meaning. Navratri as the name suggests is nine nights that celebrate the worship of Goddess Durga. She represents the divine feminine energy. Navratri is celebrated in the lunar month of Ashwin i.e. in September or October.
Goddess Durga’s fight:
Durga fought the demon Mahishasura for nine days and nine nights. On the tenth day, she defeated him thus, the tenth day is celebrated as Vijayadashmi or Dussehra. It symbolises the victory of good over evil.
Harvest Season:
In several parts of India, it marks the beginning of the harvest season. Farmers seek blessing from Durga Ma for a flourishing crop.
Spiritual significance:
Navratri is the time to reflect, meditate and offer prayers to Goddess Durga. It inspires you to focus on self-purification leading to spiritual growth.
Culmination of Dance and music:

The dance is done in circular form reminding us of the cyclical nature of life and underlining the fact that we are all interconnected. It is a symbol of the eternal cycle of the universe.
Diversity:
Navratri is celebrated differently in every part of India. In West Bengal it is a colourful and grand festival of Durga Puja with massive pandals and mithais.
In Gujarat it’s all about dance in the form of Garba and Dandiya Raas. In Tamil Nadu it marks the display of dolls called as Golu. It is a festival transcending regional boundaries.
